The Maine Coon coat is beautiful and their signature mane and tail is devine! But to keep it nice there will be a bit of work involved. I have learned to use it as a time to give my kitties special attention and love. First of all let's start with Chris Christensen products! My favorite of their products are the buttercombs and anti-static spray. They have tons of other products but these are the items I order most from them. ( I am not being paid for advertisement; just sharing my experiences) When I pull my buttercomb out my kitties stand in line for their turn. I spend about 5 minutes on their face, mane and behind the ears and back of the neck, daily. I find little mats form behind the ears and neck. So while the kitties think I am giving them 5 minutes of personal loving... I am also keeping mats from forming. Those areas on my kitties are now mat free and this is a quick easy tip that makes the kitties feel so special. I can tap on the counter with the comb and they come running. As far as the tail, behind, back and belly, I use a brush for humans. And while there are hundreds of brushes for cats, I have found the Wet brush for humans to be my favorite. It was all I could find one day at the cat show, and has turned out to be my fave. This step of combing the hind, tail, back and belly is so important and your spicy kitty may not love it like they love the the buttercomb. But with the Maine Coon's long, 3-layer coat, it is so important to try to use the brush daily. I find that my cats get litter, dirt, trash, poop in their hind end fur (under their private area down the backs of their legs) and matting starts and has to be cut out. If you brush them for 30 seconds per aread daily, you will have no matting in those areas. Another tricky location is under the arms. They tend to mat in those areas too. I will leave it to you to figure out how to coarse your cat into letting them brush that area. I have many Maine Coons and honestly... I shave the kitties bodies once a year. I love shaving them. They love to be shaved. It really helps keep their coats from getting matted. THE LAST THING I WANT TO MENTION THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR MAINE COON LIFE IS: F&T Dematter and Degreaser. It is from the Les Pooches website. It is life changing. Wash your Maine Coon with it once a month and you can thank me later. This stuff works better than any other product I have used on my Maine Coons. I also recommend you start bathing your cats the week you bring them home. Then, they will be use to the bath. Thanks for reading. Keep spreading the kitty love!
