We had a Momma cat whose name was Aries. She was a beautiful cat, silver mackerel with white. She had the most loving disposition and loved everyone she met. She was raised with our Queen Hope from a kitten. They were the best of friends. Aries got pregnant a few months ago right after her Hope. Within a week of the pregnancy she fell very ill. After many hours at the vet, it was declared she had mastitis. She was on antibiotics for 2 weeks and got better. She did have a lump under one of her teats but was told that it could be there until after the pregnancy. Aries felt and acted great the rest of the pregnancy and she gave birth to a litter of 2. Five days after the birth of her kittens (healthy chubby kittens), the mass got much larger and ruptured. It was awful in everyway and for all of us that were involved. I needed Queen Hope to take care of Aries two kittens. But, when I introduced Hope to Aries kittens, she was not happy to help at all. She hissed and swatted at the newborn kittens. So i gave them back to Aries for several hours. After that time, I knew Aries could no longer take care of her kittens. So instead of handing Hope her kittens, I had a different idea. I decided to invite Hope into the room so she could see what was going on with Aries. She immediately came into to see and smell that Aries was in trouble. Hope came into the room totally disarmed and laid by Aries. She immediately started to lick Aries head. After this went on for several minutes, I picked up Aries kitten from her belly and showed them to Hope so she could see who's kittens those were. Hope immediately started to clean off Aries kittens and let them nurse right there in front of Aries. She gladly has taken care of Aries kittens since that encounter. This goes to show you that cats do have compassion and understanding of situations. A lot of it is instinct. But, I witnessed in this case, a mother and friend that could tell her favorite kitty companion was in danger and needed help. Hope will not take other kittens that are not hers and has proved this time and time again. But she made an exception this time because it was her buddy! This has proven to me that cat's do have emotions and feelings! It was the single sweetest cat encounter I have ever witnessed. We did lose Aries. She was so special to my family. She is and will be missed for a long time!
