Maine Coons are said to be dog-like in disposition. These cats are intelligent, friendly, and gentle. Laid-back and self-assured, these cats tend to take everything in stride . They can usually coexist peacefully with other household pets, including other cats, and cat-friendly dogs.
Maine Coons are sociable and inquisitive, and can usually be found wherever the action is in the house, inserting themselves into every interesting situation. Talkative but not overly loud, they express themselves through a variety of soft and melodious meows, chirps, and trills. They are quite trainable cats and enjoy learning tricks, responding well to positive training methods and tasty food treats. Maine Coons often love water and may play in it, bathe in it, dip their food in it, and even swim.
The Maine Coon is a rugged, solid cat that is well-proportioned and balanced despite their size. They have long, rectangular, muscalr bodies with broad chest. They have beautiful paint brushes on the the tips of their ears known as tufts or lynx. Their tails are huge, fluffly long tails that typically are as long as their bodies. You can always find them with their puffy tail in the air prancing around. The head is longer in length than width. The cheekbones are high and they have a square muzzle. Thier coats are heavy and shaggy and the hair around their neck is like a lion's mane. They come in many different colors and patterns.
The Maine Coon cat's long, shaggy coat is silky and slighly oily making their coat water-resistant, allowing it to repel rain and snow, keeping the cat warmer and drier in inclement weather. Though long, the coat doesn't shed excessively as long as it is brushed and combed daily. You will want to bathe your cat at least monthly to help the coat look and feel clean. There are amazing products out there that will help you to maintain a mat free coat. Trim your cat's nails regularly and look inside their ears often. Maine Coons are typically active without being hyper. They enjoying playing, walking on a harness and playing fetch. To keep you kitty physically and mentally stimulated, engage them with playful toys. Scratching is a natural behavior that is also mentally and phyiscally enriching. They have wonderful big cat scratching post to keep them entertained. They also love to be up high so getting an extra large cat tree will make them super happy! We have found some wonderful extra large litter boxes as well that are purrfect for Maine Coons. With the long tail, it is best not to cram them in a small box. It is a mess for everyone!
The Maine Coon cat is friendly, kind, and steady in terperament, which makes them wonderful companions. These cats are alos quite trainsable and sociable, and many have been certified therapy cats. Maine Coons are affectionate and want to be close to you, but they are not overly clingy. They can be entertaining to watch and they engage in silly antics, and they tend to get into everything. The Maine Coon is slow to mature, with most not reaching their full growth until about 4 years of age.
