How And When Can I Pick Up My Kitten?
We abide by the TICA code of ethics; kittens go to their forever homes after 12 weeks of age; once they have received a minimum of 3 rounds of core vaccinations, as well as preventive deworming. The remaining balance of the kitten price is due in cash, when you pick up your kitten. You can come to our cattery to pick up your kitten or we have several options for you to receive your kitten.
Are Kittens Already Spayed/Neutered? Do I Get Registration Papers And Officially Name My Kitten?
Maine Coons mature slower than other domestic cats, so they should not endure anesthesia for spay/neuter prior to 6 months of age. Female kittens typically go into heat when they reach 9 months of age. Males can begin to spray urine, around 10-12 months of age, marking their environment. Our Purchase Contract requires all kittens to be spayed/neutered by 1 year of age. It is the Buyer's responsibility to have their pet kitten neutered/spayed and we do not reimburse for this expense. Most vets will not spay/neuter a purebred kitten until they are 6 months old! Buyers receive their kitten's TICA registration papers once we receive documentation from their vet, of their sterilization; neuter/spay. We email the Breeder's Slip to the Buyer's eamil address on the vet receipt. Buyers choose the kitten's official name, when they register their kitten with TICA.
Will My Kitten Need Additional Vaccinations And Preventive Dewormings?
Vaccinations and deworming are standard practice. Kittens receive 3 sets of core vaccinations at 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 12 weeks of age. We recommend one more core vaccine at age 16 weeks and rabies vaccine when the kitten is at their furever home. Thereafter, only 1 core vaccination is due annually. This vaccine covers Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calci, Panleukopenia, and Chlamydia. Kittens do not receive the Leukemia vaccine since our cats & kittens are not allowed to roam outdoors around other cats. Once a Leukemia vaccine is administered, a kitten will test positive for Leukemia antibodies thereafter. Also, we do not administer the FIP or FIV vaccines, since research has shown it can contribute to causing those diseases.
Are Kittens Already Litter-Box Trained?
Kittens are taught to start using their litter boxes by their mommy cat's example, beginning at 4 weeks of age. Kitten are well trained, by the time they leave us from 10 weeks of age or older. Please refer to our kitten tip sheet (provided at the time of kitten pick up), regarding getting them acclimated to their litterbox in their new home.
What Cat Food Do We Use?
We feed all of the cats and kittens PurinaPro Plan dry food and PurinaPro Plan canned food. We also make homemade chicken bone broth and mix it in with the wet food twice a day. NuVet powder supplment is mixed in with the twice a day wet food. All of our cats free feed on the dry food, as there is always food out for them.
